A device for generating a hydrogen-rich gas with a low carbon monoxide content, with a gas-generating device for the catalytic water-vapour reforming of a water-vapour/fuel mixture and/or for the partial oxidation of an oxygen/fuel mixture, with a gas-cleaning stage for the removal of carbon monoxide from the product gas of the gas-generating device with the aid of selective CO oxidation, and with supply and discharge lines. A device is provided upstream of reactors with catalytically active regions with additional catalytically active regions which can be separated in terms of flow, and flow-deflecting means are provided in order to free or shut off the additional catalytically active regions in a temperature-dependent manner.
