PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To guarantee smooth degassing and prevent foreign matter intrusion to a sliding part without changing a minute gap between a piston rod and a rod guide. SOLUTION: In the hydraulic shock absorber, an oil sump chamber 14 is provided between an oil seal 6 and the rod guide 5 slidably guiding the piston rod 4, and oil liquid accumulated in the oil sump chamber 14 is returned to a reservoir 9 via a check valve 15 provided on the oil seal 6 and an oil passage 16 provided in the rod guide 5. A ring 21 comprising low friction material and an O-ring 22 for backup pressing the ring 21 against the piston rod 4 are doubly arranged in a recessed part 20 provided in an opening rim part of the rod guide 5. Intrusion of foreign matter between the piston rod 4 and a bush 10 is prevented by the ring 21. Gas accumulated in an upper part of a piston upper chamber S is released to the reservoir 9 by passing it through a passage 24 formed in the rod guide 5 and opening a check valve 25.
