A compressed air brake valve assembly comprises a piston 14 subjected to a moderating pressure in chamber 34 and rigidly connected to a piston 16 subject to brake cylinder pressure in chamber 36, a piston 28 subject to pressure in automatic pipe A, a manually-controlled brake applying and releasing device D controlling all the brakes and a number of auxiliary brake applying and releasing devices Da to independently release associated brakes. Valve 74 is opened by member 72 and rod 60 to change chamber 40 from source S to lower piston 28 and open valve 52 to apply the rear trailer brakes via pipe C 1 and the front trailer brakes via pipe 98, valve 94 normally opened by automatic pipe pressure in chamber 88 and pipe C 3 . The front brakes can be released by lowering member 92 and rod 80 to close valve 94 and vent the brake cylinders via a passage through rod 80. All the brakes are released by closing valve 74 and venting chamber 40, chamber 36 then being vented via valve 58. The brakes are applied automatically by loss of pressure in pipe A.
