A controller 10 for a ventilation or extraction fan 12 has an output 11 for fan control and inputs 14 for receiving signals "A", "B", "C", "D", "E" from a variety of input sensors. The controller is arranged to control the fan rotational speed and/or switch the fan on or off in response to at least one sensor input signal. The controller may be used in conjunction with a cooking device that may be an electric or gas hob. The input signals may include a signal representing measured current from the electrical hob supply or a signal representing the gas flow to the gas hob. Other input signals may include temperature, humidity, and gas concentration, for example, combustion gases such as carbon monoxide, carbon dioxide, or other noxious gases. The controller may detect a signal threshold value or a rate of signal increase greater than a predetermined rate, and may also detect which type of sensor is connected and configure a signal processor 16 accordingly. Other examples of where the extractor fan may be used include kitchens, bathrooms, or hot water shower applications. |
