PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an apparatus and a method for the measurement of the characteristic of optical fiber wherein the characteristic of an optical fiber to be measured can be measured over a long distance while keeping high spatial resolution. SOLUTION: The optical fiber characteristic measuring apparatus is provided with a light source 10 which emits a laser beam, an optical modulator 14 which modulates a part of the laser beam so as to be incident as a probe beam L1 from one end of the optical fiber 14, a pulse modulator 18 in which the remainder of a part of the laser beam emitted from the light source 10 is pulsated so as to be incident as a pump beam L2 from the other end of the optical fiber 17, a timing regulator 20 by which only light from a part near a measuring point to be set in the optical fiber 17 is passed from among light emitted from the other end of the optical fiber 17 and a photodetector 22 which detects the light passed through the timing regulator 20 and which measures the characteristic of the optical fiber 17.
