PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a method and apparatus for bending capable of bending a workpiece in a prescribed bending angle even if a workpiece having variations in wall thickness is bent in an inclined position from the center of a ram to one side. SOLUTION: When a ram 4 descends, an upper die 1 provided in the bottom end of the ram 4 abuts to a play workpiece S. When an abutting position to the workpiece W of the upper die 1 is detected, the upper die 1 descends to bend the workpiece only by the amount corresponding to the bending angle of the workpiece W from the detected abutting position. A tilt-regulating mechanism 30 to regulate the tilt of the ram 4 is provided so that a parallel condition of the ram 4 and the table 5 relative to the generation of a moment which tries to tilt the ram 4 between the ram 4 and a frame is maintained. The tilt- regulating mechanism 30 is so composed as to allow the ram 4 tilting when the moment is bigger than the maximum moment that can be generated at the time of detecting the abutment of the upper die 1 to the workpiece W.
