1,1-Dixylylethylene and 1,1-ditolylethylene are obtained (with other compounds, see Division C2) by oxidizing the corresponding dixylyl- and ditolyl-ethanes with O2 at 25-110 DEG C. in presence of 0.02-10 weight per cent of an organic salt of a transition metal.ALSO:A mixture containing a benzophenone(mono)-carboxylic acid is made by oxidizing a 1,1-bis-(C1- 16-alkyl phenyl)-C2- 16-alkane with O2 at 25-110 DEG C. in presence of 0.02-10 wt. per cent of an organic salt of a transition metal. The mixture (or extracted components) may be further oxidized with HNO3 to benzophenonepolycarboxylic acids. Examples are given of the conversion of 1,1-dixylylethane (I) with O2 to dixylylmethylcarbinol, tetramethylbenzophenone (II) and trimethylbenzophenonecarboxylic acid (III) and of 1,1-ditolylethane to ditolylmethylcarbinol, dimethylbenzophenone and 4 - methylbenzophenone - 41 - monocarboxylic acid; HNO3 oxidation of the mixture obtained from I, or of the extracted II or III, gives benzophenone-3,4,31,41-tetracarboxylic acid.
|
