A thermoplastic sheet is bonded to a rigid or semi-rigid adhesively coated base layer, e.g. hardboard, with a layer of foam material, e.g. polyurethane, therebetween, by means of heated platens, the platen adjacent to the thermoplastic sheet having ribs surrounding patterned areas, so that during pressing the ribs compress the foam layer and bond the thermoplastic sheet to the adhesively-coated base whilst the patterned areas emboss the thermoplastic sheet. The platen may be of metal or of an organopolysiloxane elastomer with a metal surround, adjacent areas may carry different patterns, and the thermoplastic sheet, which may be a homopolymer or copolymer of vinyl or vinylidene or a copolymer or terpolymer of acrylonitrile, butadiene and styrene, may be formed from differently coloured sections welded together by the bonding operation referred to above. The base may be adhesively coated only in the areas of bonding. |
