PURPOSE: A fringe field switching liquid crystal display device is provided to realize the liquid crystal display device operating at a low power consumption by selecting a proper refraction index anisotropy by using the relation between a retardation value of liquid crystal molecules and a driving voltage. CONSTITUTION: A fringe field switching liquid crystal display device includes upper and lower substrates facing to each other with a predetermined distance, a liquid crystal layer interposed between the substrates and including a plurality of liquid crystal molecules, first and second ITO electrodes(17,13) disposed on the lower substrate with an electrode width(w), a distance(l) between the electrodes being zero or larger than the electrode width, for forming fringe fields to operate the most liquid crystal molecules, first and second polarization plates disposed on outer surfaces of the substrates respectively with a predetermined polarization axis, and first and second orientation films disposed on inner surfaces of the substrates respectively with a predetermined rubbing axis, wherein the polarization axes of the first and second polarization plates are perpendicular or parallel to each other and the refraction index anisotropy of the liquid crystal molecules is 0.05-0.15 at 25°C, 589nm when a cell gap is 2-4micrometer.
