PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a coater with which a smooth coated surface free from the variation of thickness through the whole width and coating defects such as streaking is obtained and a method of manufacturing a coated material. SOLUTION: The coater 100 for coating a traveling web like base material 10 to be coated by a direct gravure unit 50 composed of a gravure roll 5, an impression cylinder 9 and a coating liquid pan 3 has a reverse coating unit 60 composed of a reverse coating roll 1 rotating reversely to the base material 10 to be coated and a manifold coating liquid pan 3 right after the direct gravure unit 50 and the reverse coating roll 1 has a small diameter of 20-30ϕand the cell shape thereof is formed into a continuous spiral groove.
