PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a portable image reader which can have its read range set easily, when reading an image of a large-sized document. SOLUTION: The portable image reader 10 is equipped with a transparent document read window 2 in one surface of a casing 1, and a see-through window 3, for observing a document surface with naked eyes through the document read window, an image read part which scans the image of the document through the document read window 3, an image storage part which stores image data read by the image read part, and an image output part which outputs the image data stored in the image storage part to external devices in the other surface of the housing and also provided with a scale 5, on the surface of the peripheral edge part of the document read window 2, inside the casing 1 or the surface of the casing 1 adjacent to the circumference of the document read window 2. The setting of read range of the document is facilitated with the scale 5 and an index for read overlap setting is provided at part of the scale 5, so as to make it facilitate setting of the overlap range for a divisional read.
