PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To read a servo pattern regardless of the front side or the back side of the disk assembled and loaded when the device in manufactured. SOLUTION: This magnetic disk device is provided with a magnetic disk on which servo sectors are provided in the circumferential direction of the disk at prescribed intervals, a magnetic head which writes data to the magnetic disk or reads data from the disk and an actuator which moves the magnetic head, and performs head positioning on the basis of the positional information read out from the servo sectors. Moreover, the servo pattern in the servo sector is recorded by using: a servo pattern for forward rotation; and a servo pattern for backward rotation which can be read in a direction of rotation opposite to the direction of rotation of the disk at patterning for the forward rotation. Then, the device automatically selects the servo pattern suited to the direction of rotation of the disk of the device after assembly from the servo pattern for the forward rotation and the servo pattern for the backward rotation to make the selected servo pattern to be servo sectors.
