PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a tracking signal generator that is adaptable to various specifications of optical discs with small software development load reducing the manufacturing cost. SOLUTION: This tracking signal generator has a pretreatment circuit 2 for error signals B to generates signals D, a phase compensating filter 3 for signals D to generate signals F, an operation means 6 for phase compensation operation of signals D to generate signals J, a switch 8 to choose either signal F or signals J, and a post processing circuit 4 for the signals selected by the switch 8 to output as the tracking control signals. And it is featured in that the above-mentioned pretreatment circuit 2, the phase compensating filter 3, and the post processing circuit 4 are constituted in hardware, and the above- mentioned operation means 6 is constituted in software to perform predetermined programs.
