PURPOSE: Provided is a preparation method of a non-ionic surfactant having a plurality of hydroxy groups in a molecule and represented by the formula(1). The hydroxy group has hydrophilicity, therefore, the non-ionic surfactant is excellent in solubility, moisture retention, biodecomposability and has less human body irritation. CONSTITUTION: The non-ionic surfactant characteristically contains a compound represented by the formula(1), wherein R is a C7-C12 linear or branched alkyl group, or an alkenyl group; X and Y are individually or simultaneously -(CH2CHOHCH2O)nH OR -(CH2CH2O)nH, and each of X and Y is an integer of 1-10. It is prepared by the steps of: providing a secondary amine derivative of the formula(2); and amidation of the secondary amine derivative and at least one of fatty acid, fatty acid methyl ester or acyl halide represented by the formula(3).
