PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a moving picture recording device which enables a user to easily and pleasantly search a moving picture for a desired scene. SOLUTION: When an index to be displayed on a display device 107 is generated, break points of scenes are detected (S501), scene coupling processing is performed (S504) in the case that the number of scenes exceeds a preliminarily set first threshold (S502) or the length of scenes is equal to or shorter than a second threshold (S503). In scene coupling processing, scenes are so coupled that the number of scenes can be reduced and the length of each scene can exceed the second threshold and the standard deviation of the lengths of respective scenes can be as small as possible. Thereafter, still pictures are generated (S505) and are made to correspond to the moving picture and are recorded in a hard disk drive 104 as indexes (S506).
