PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an image reader which improves the image quality of a read image by eliminating dust, etc., on the read position of a read means. SOLUTION: The image reader 1 is so arranged that a cylindrical transparent film 20, which has at least the horizontal-scanning direction width of a read sensor 10 makes one round of the read sensor 10 in a document-conveying direction, and the transparent film 20 is moved by rollers 21 to 22 in a document-carrying direction in contact with the surface of a contact glass to make one round of the circumference of the read sensor 10 and move to the contact glass 14 again; and a cleaning member 30 is brought into contact with the transparent film 20, whose surface is cleaned. Therefore, neither dust not dirt will be left on the contact glass 14 at all times, and the image quality of a read image of the document 13 by the read sensor 10 can be improved.
