PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To relax concentrated accesses from subscribers, quickly provide broad area information and district associated information and various information conveniences useful such as broadcast and conferences to the subscribers. SOLUTION: An Internet information providing system is provided with: a plurality of local portals 2 connecting subscriber terminals 4 via a public line connection network 6; and a central portal 1 connected to the Internet 5 and to each local portal 2 via an inter-portal backbone communication network 11. Each local portal 2 provides area associated information to the subscriber terminals 4 and connects the subscriber terminal 4 to the Internet 5 or the central portal 1 as required. The central portal 1 provides national and global wide area information to the subscriber terminals 4 connected via the inter-portal backbone communication network 11 and connects the subscriber terminal 4 to the Internet 5 as required.
