The invention relates to a color image displaying apparatus for color display by using a single light bulb serving as modulating means and to a projection image displaying apparatus.A color image displaying method and apparatus such that the discontinuity of the display luminance variation with gradation variation is resolved are provided.With respect to the discontinuity of the variation of display light amount with gradation variation,if there is a temporal variation of the light amount of each illumination color light made to enter an image display panel and moved,or even if not,a predetermined value of the incident light amount and the timing at which the incident light amount takes on the predetermined value are determined,the timing of each PWM drive display gradation bit is set so that the display luminance of the PWM drive display gradation bit n may be the product of the predetermined value multiplied by 2n.Thus,the luminance discontinuity between the display gradation levels is resolved for color image display.
