DIAGNOSIS AND TREATMENT OF INSULIN-DEPENDENT DIABETES MELLITUS AND INSULITIS

Insulin-dependent diabetes mellitus and insulitis can be photodynamically diagnosed or photodynamically treated by administering a fluorescent photosensitive substance which is specifically incorporated by macrophages infiltrating into an inflammation site of the islet of a patient with insuli n- dependent diabetes mellitus due to insulitis or an X ray-absorbing substance which is specifically incorporated by the macrophages as described above and absorbs X ray upon irradiation with X ray, then irradiating the part of the pancreas involving the macrophage infiltrating into the inflammation site du e to insulitis with excitation light or X-ray, and observing the fluorescence or X ray absorption occurring at the inflammation site; or allowing the photosensitive substance or the X ray-absorbing substance to injure or disru pt the macrophages under irradiation with light or X ray at a sufficiently stro ng irradiation dose. Diagnostic compositions or therapeutic compositions appropriate for the above-described diagnosis or treatment are provided.
