The method involves charging a cell up to the onset of gassing, calculating the cell temperature from measured voltage and current, measuring the cell temperature, and determining the difference between the measured and the calculated temperatures. The state-of-charge is determined from a predetermined relationship between the calculated temperature difference and state-of-charge. The calculated temperature values may be low-pass filtered prior to further processing.
