The invention relates to an apparatus for milking livestock such as cows, comprising a block-shaped frame (2) open on one side (3) and having a front side and a rear side relative to respectively head and udder of livestock for milking in the milking box (1), and having a movable entrance and/or exit gate for selectively opening an entrance and/or exit in the open side (3) of the frame (2); teat cups for milking the livestock with for instance a milking robot; and placing means for positioning livestock for milking at a desired location with udders thereof at a predefined location, wherein the placing means comprise a frame part (5) on the rear side of the frame, which frame part (5) is movable away from and toward the front side of the frame (2), and the milking robot is adapted to orient itself to the udders in relation to the frame part (5).
