A method for long life lubrication of meshing gears has active lubricant incorporated into the surface layers of at least one component, to be released when the gears mesh. The lubricant can be applied during casting of the components or one of the components can be made using a sinter process, with the lubricant incorporated at one stage. The system requires no special lubricant seals or lubricant feed.
