A method of oxidizing primary and secondary alcohols to an aldehyde or ketone using a fluorous sulfoxide or a fluorous sulfide is disclosed. The method includes regenerating and recycling the fluorous sulfoxide which has the structure, wherein Rf is fluorinated hydrocarbon chain containing one to twelve carbon atoms; R is C1-4alkyl or (CH2)n-Rf; and n is 1 to 3. These compounds are claimed per se.
