PURPOSE: To realize a liquid crystal display device of low power consumption and high picture quality. CONSTITUTION: In a pixel area on a liquid crystal side of one of the substrates arranged via the liquid crystal, 1st switching elements and 2nd switching elements operated by scanning signals from gate signal lines, picture electrodes supplied with video signals from drain signal lines via the 1st switching elements, and a counter electrode supplied with a reference voltage signal from a reference voltage signal line via the 2nd switching elements are provided, and the picture electrodes and the counter electrode are each formed of a zonal translucent conductive layer, and also they are alternately arranged in a substantial pixel area.
