A method for cold weld joining of sheet material, e.g. sheet metal, has the overlapping edges of the material gripped between a punch and die and with sufficient pressure applied to deform the material and cause the material of the top sheet to flow into that of the bottom sheet and thereby form a grip. The die can have a flat surface and both the punch and the die have ridges on the thrust faces to dig into the material to enhance the strength of the grip joint.
