A hydraulic damper has an expansion chamber (19) on the piston rod side, formed by a pot shaped insert(21) with a hole in the base for the piston rod. The chamber is normally partly filled with hydraulic fluid and has a large air space connected to atmosphere via a dust filter (11) in the top of the damper. The expansion chamber is linked to the damper by a small gap between the piston rod and the housing, with this gap smaller than that between the piston and the cylinder wall. The piston has no piston rings and incorporates flow control valves.
