A system is described for parsing an input sentence. The system includes a set of sub-grammar parsers, each sub-grammar parser containing a set of grammar rules to parse a portion of a natural language grammar. The system further includes a subsystem to identify at least one of said sub-grammar parsers applicable to a portion of an input text being analyzed and to parse said portion using said at least one of said sub-grammar parsers identified as being applicable. In one embodiment, a table is used to facilitate the sub-grammar searching process. The table contains a number of sub-grammar categories, each sub-grammar category associated with a set of left corner conditions. One or more sub-grammar categories applicable to a current word being analyzed can be identified by comparing the current word being analyzed against the left corner conditions associated with individual sub-grammar categories.
