PURPOSE: Provided is a watertight and thermally insulating tank which is used for storing liquified gases such as liquified natural gas having methane components at about 160 deg.C. CONSTITUTION: The watertight and thermally insulating tank includes a number of walls having a variable width and forming inclined solid angles of intersection. The tank also includes a secondary thermally insulating and watertight barrier and a primary thermally insulating barrier. These barriers are formed by panels fixed on the wall and capable of supporting a primary watertight barrier. The primary watertight barrier includes at least one central strake(63). Each of the strakes is longitudinally disposed on each of the width-variable walls and fixed on a lower panel(12). The primary watertight barrier also includes running strakes(66). Each of the running strakes is fixed by the central strake and held mechanically on panels. The running strake constitutes a sliding joint.
