A self contained sensing apparatus (10) includes a housing (12) establishing an interior compartment (36), the housing having a maximum thickness which is less than the size of an access (110) extending through a principal housing surface (16). A sensor (90) is provided within the housing (12) and generally aligned with the window (40) for sensing at least one parameter. In a preferred embodiment, the sensor (90) is an optical sensor for sensing images through the window (40). A transmitter (96) is provided within the housing (12) and coupled with the sensor for receiving signals representative of the sensed parameter and transmitting the signals out of the housing.
