PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To enable a user to visually recognize the set state of a document on a platen even while the platen upper face is closed by a document cover plate without considerably increasing the cost. SOLUTION: Window parts 2a and 2b provided with liquid crystal panels 1a and 1b are formed in two positions of a document cover plate 112. Window parts 2a and 2b vertically pierce the document cover plate 112. Liquid crystal panels 1a and 1b are made transparent while image scanning processing is not performed, but they are set to the light shielding state in image scanning processing. The window part 2a is formed in such position with the Y direction as the lengthwise direction that it may face the part of the upper face of a size index plate 111a, where at least a reference index 111aa and a scale 111ab are expressed, and the upper face of a document platen 111 in the vicinity of this part when the document cover plate 112 is closed. The window part 2b is formed in such position with the X direction as the lengthwise direction that it may face a part of the other shorter side of a document D placed in a proper position on the platen 111 when the document cover plate 112 is closed.
