PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To make satisfactory alignment and satisfactory contrast characteristics compatible with each other and to provide the simplification of stages and the reduction of material cost with respect to a liquid crystal display element used for character and image display, a shutter or the like and the manufacturing method therefor. SOLUTION: In the liquid crystal display element having a liquid crystal interposed between a pair of substrates, the satisfactory alignment and the satisfactory contrast characteristics can be made compatible with each other and the simplification of the stages and the reduction of the material cost can be provided by forming a protrusion for controlling the alignment and a light shielding layer shielding light on the same substrate by using the same material.
