PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a rotary kiln which can heat an article being heated with a highest thermal efficiency depending on the situation, and its operating method. SOLUTION: Direction of a burner frame can be altered depending on the variation in the type, mixing ratio, treating quantity, discharge temperature, and the like, of an article being heated. A burner 3 is suspended by an appropriate suspender and the forward end thereof can be swung up and down and to the left and right by about 5 deg. in several minutes without stopping the operation through an angle regulator 4 fixed to the kiln furnace body 1 and movable in the X-Y direction by means of a manual handle. Forward end 3a of the burner frame can thereby be directed in any direction over the entire range of traverse section of the kiln furnace body 1.
