PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a hydrophilization treatment method for a heat exchanger in which the odor of a hydrophilized film itself to be obtained is suppressed even when used over a long period, and the generation of unpeasant odor is suppressed after its lying in the presence of odor material, and which can maintain hydrophilic properties, and a heat exchanger treated by the hydrophilization treatment method. SOLUTION: The hydrophilization treatment method contains a stage where a heat exchanger is subjected to rust prevention treatment, and is thereafter coated with a hydrophilization treatment agent to form a film having a solid film content of 0.02 to 3 g/m<2> . The hydrophilization treatment agent contains (A) denatured polyvinyl alcohol having a group expressed by the formula (I) [wherein, (n) is an integer of 1 to 500; R<1> is a hydrogen atom or a 1 to 4C alkyl group; and R<2> is a hydrogen atom or a methyl group] on side chains, and the group expressed by the formula (I) is a hydroxyl group and an acetoxy group of 0.01 to 20 mol%, and (B) at least one selected from the group consisting of the phosphorus and boron compounds of Ca, Al, Mg, Fe and Zn.
