PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a sheet feeder allowing sheet separating and supplying operation to be automatically stabilized even in the case of the existence of deformation such as binding waviness and curl in sheets. SOLUTION: The sheet feeder comprises sheet suction means for sucking the outsidemost sheet at a close position where a sucker is moved close to a stack, moving the sucker far from the stack in such a state and separating the outsidemost sheet from the stack in proximity to at least a suction portion, surface position measurement means for measuring the surface position of the outsidemost sheet in proximity to the suction portion, close position control means for calculating a manipulated variable in accordance with the surface position measured before suction so that a distance between the close position and the surface position becomes a target distance, and close position manipulation means for manipulating the close position of the sucker in accordance with the manipulated variable.
