PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a saliva pretreatment instrument used for identifying or quantifying mutant streptococci in salive by an immunological chromatography method utilizing antigen-antibody reaction, and a saliva pretreatment method using the same. SOLUTION: The saliva pretreatment instrument is constituted of a swab X wherein sponge 2 made of a soft synthetic resin capable of absorbing a predetermined amount or more of saliva is fixed to the leading end of a gripping rod 1 and a mixing container Y of saliva and a treatment liquid made of a transparent or translucent soft synthetic resin having a bag-shaped part 3d integrally formed thereto so as to be continued to the constricted part 3c being the end point of a tapered introducing part 3b having an opening part 3a, having elasticity capable of squeezing the sponge 2 made of the soft synthetic resin inserted in the container by applying finger pressure to the constricted part 3c and the bag-shaped part 3d, characterized in that the constricted part 3c has width capable of being pressed by a finger and capable of squeezing salive in an amount not less than the minimum amount necessary for pretreating saliva when the sponge 2 made of the soft synthetic resin is pulled out in a state crushed by finger pressure.
