The invention provides a connection management method for devices connected by a digital interface, e.g. the IEEE 1394 standard, using a predetermined data format, e.g. IEC 61883. A controller 300 establishes connection between two or more devices 100, 200 and is informed by the devices of any changes in the status of the connection, e.g. a change in the transmitter/receiver device or a change in the number of devices involved in the connection. The connection is controlled in response to the reported changes. For example, if a receiver indicates that it no longer wishes to receive information from a transmitter, the appropriate connection is broken. The controller transmits connection management commands (fig. 4) to the devices comprising bit fields that represent various parameters of the connection, e.g. bandwidth. The devices respond specifying changes in the bit fields. Alternatively, a transmitter may notify a receiver of any changes or vice versa. Preferably the command structure complies with the form of a notify command of the audio-video/control command transaction set (AV/C - CTS).
