PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To carry out excavation without creating a water way on the downside of a shield machine. SOLUTION: The shield machine 1 for cutting and covering a bottom of water, which excavates a tunnel in such a manner as to make an upside located in the water and make a downside buried in sediment at the bottom of the water, in order to construct the tunnel in the bottom of the water, is equipped with a water-bottom-surface measuring device 22, which is provided in an upper part of an end of a shield frame 2 so as to survey a state of a water-bottom surface 21 excavated by the shield machine 1, and an amount-of-earth-removal adjusting mechanism 23 which increases/decreases the amount of earth removal performed by a screw conveyor 9, according to the state of the surface 21 measured by the device 22.
