The apparatus comprises a unit for forming a slit pipe out of a metal strip, and a unit for welding the longitudinal pipe slit. The welding unit is a laser welding unit with a welding head which is inclined at an angle to the vertical. Behind the laser welding head (1) there is a trap (3) for reflected laser beams (1b). The beam trap comprises a metal housing with water cooled walls whose inner surfaces are blackened. The beam trap is positioned relative to the laser welding head (1) in such a way that the reflected beams (1b) enter into the interior of its housing.
