PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To realize a high gradation number display at a low cost in a two terminal element type and active matrix type liquid crystal panel. SOLUTION: One time line selection interval T is divided into a plurality of partial selection intervals P1 and P2 and a signal potential VB is pulse width modulated for every partial selection interval. When the number of gradation level to be realized is set to 'sixteen' (four bits) and a pulse width modulation based on upper and lower two bits is conducted for the intervals P1 and P2, a two bit constitution is used for the circuit (a counter, a comparator or the like) to conduct the pulse width modulation. Since several tens to several thousands of signal electrodes are required for every signal electrode of these circuits, the constitution of the entire liquid crystal panel is greatly simplified.
