PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To prevent display quality from deteriorating. SOLUTION: A 1st display electrode 5a is placed along a lower face F1 , and 2nd display electrodes 5b are placed along an upper face F2 , and between these electrodes, 1st control electrodes 6a are placed. When the voltage applied to this 1st control electrodes 6a is large, charged electrophoretic particles 3 are inhibited from moving between the 1st display electrode 5a and the 2nd display electrodes 5b, and when the voltage applied to this 1st control electrodes 6a is small, the movement is permitted. Here, since the 1st control electrodes 6a are placed at the positions as stated above, display contrast can be enhanced, and the display quality can be prevented from deteriorating.
