PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To display the life of a brake element such as a pad without giving a driver an anxious impression, and securely recognize the exchange timing of the brake element even when a controller 18 gets out of order. SOLUTION: That the lining of the brake element wore down by a predermined amount is detected by a disconnection detecting circuit 11a. The running distance of a vehicle is measured by a distance measuring means 12a. The life reaching the wear tolerable limit thickness is obtained from the residual thickness until the predermined amount of wearing for the lining and the running distance until the predermined amount of wearing with a computing unit 13. An indicator 14 indicates the life. When the controller 18 including the computing unit 13 gets out of order, the data stored up to then in a storage part of the controller 18 are transferred to a storage part of the other controller newly integrated.
