<p>A composition comprises rubber, a methylene acceptor, and a methylene donor which is a derivative of urea, imidazolidinone, or hydantoin, at least one nitrogen atom of which has a -CH2OX radical attached thereto, X being hydrogen or a C1- 8 alkyl group. The methylene acceptor may be a meta-disubstituted benzene where the substituents are -OH, -NH2, or -OCOCH3, 1,5-naphthalene diol, or partial reaction products of such compounds with formaldehyde. The composition bonds to textile materials on heating.ALSO:A reinforcing element is adhered to rubber by applying a vulcanizable rubber coating to said element and heating the assembly to vulcanize the rubber, in which at least the portion of the assembly adjacent the interface of the element and the rubber coating has incorporated into it a methylene donor and a suitable methylene acceptor capable of reacting with the methylene donor, the donor containing at least one <FORM:1097470/D1-D2/1> group in which X is hydrogen or C1-C8 alkyl, the two remaining valences being connected to C or H, said donor being an N-(substituted oxymethylene) derivative of urea or thiourea of formula <FORM:1097470/D1-D2/2> a cyclic urea of formula <FORM:1097470/D1-D2/3> (II) or an N-(substituted oxymethylene) of formula <FORM:1097470/D1-D2/4> (III) wherein Y is oxygen or sulphur. Suitable compounds are resorcinol with 1,3-dimethylol-2-imidazolidinone and 1,3-dimethylol-2-imidazolinethione and m-aminophenol with the same two imidazolidine compounds. Suitable elements are textile cords made from rayon, nylon, or polyester.</p> |
