Current commutation by bi-directional switches in matrix converter

A method of commutation of current in a matrix converter having at least three input phases by bi-directional switches 1.1, 1.2, 1.3, separately controlled in each direction. The method avoids short circuit currents through the switches and overvoltage on circuit elements by eliminating commutations between switches for which it is impossible to determine the exact voltage relation between them at a given time. Space vector modulation (SVM) may be utilised. The invention can be used in induction motor drives, special power supplies etc.
