The invention relates to the human use of inactivated parapox viruses for th e prophylaxis and the treatment of illnesses associated with increased collage n deposition, said illnesses affecting inner organs, e.g. the liver, and also skin and the appendages thereof. Liver fibrosis or liver cirrhosis resulting from viral hepatitis or ethanol-induced liver diseases such as cystic fibros is are especially relevant.
