<p>A powertrain comprises an internal combustion engine and an automatic gearbox coupled to the engine via a torque converter having a turbine. The powertrain is controlled by a controller which receives a plurality of inputs from various sensors and uses these inputs in a control method comprising: 1) determining a desired wheel torque 200, based on accelerator pedal position; 2) determine engine speed 202; 3) determine turbine speed 202; 4) determining a selected gear/gear ratio 204; 5) determining current vehicle speed. When the vehicle speed exceeds a corresponding threshold, the selected gear ratio is not taken into account when determining the desired engine torque and wheel speed is used instead. On the other hand, when the vehicle speed is below the corresponding threshold, the gear ratio is taken into account when determining the desired engine torque. The method also includes determining a torque ratio based on engine speed and engine inertia and adjusting a spake based on the torque ratio for a predetermined time after a ratio change has been commanded to reduce actual engine torque during the ratio change.</p> |
