1,051,529. Producing aluminium. R.R. REYNOLDS. Aug.2, 1965 [July 31, 1964], No. 33010/65. Heading C7D. Aluminium is obtained from alumina containing ores (preferably bauxite) by heating them at a temperature over 2200‹C. (e.g. 2250‹-2500‹C. ) in the presence of a carbonaceous reducing agent (e.g. colse or charcoal) under a pressure sufficient to prevent the escape of aluminium vapour and to let carbon monoxide escape (e.g. 0À5 to 15 atmospheres gauge). Carbon or carbon monoxide must not be allowed to come into contact with molten aluminium which is at a temperature of less than 2200‹C. and this may be accomplished by allowing the carbon monoxide to escape and not tapping the molten product until it has all escaped. |
