PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To prevent a discrimination error due to mixed noise in discriminating a cylinder based on a signal by a cam sensor only. SOLUTION: In backup control for cylinder discrimination based on a signal by a cam sensor only because of failure of a crank angle sensor, a periodic ratio between a previous computation value and a current computation value of a cylinder discrimination period is compared with a threshold value at a cylinder discrimination timing in non-starting time (S71-S76). When it is smaller than the threshold value, it is determined that noise is mixed to cause the cylinder discrimination error, and result of discrimination is cancelled (S77).
