A semi-solid electrolyte of the type described in Specification 806,592 is made by pressing powdered material, e.g. an equipolar mixture of sodium carbonate and lithium carbonate with a filler of magnesium oxide, at a temperature below that at which there is a liquid phase present. The above electrolyte is pressed at 480‹ C. in a die painted with a dispersion of colloidal graphite as lubricant. An alternative material comprises the carbonates of lithium, sodium and potassium mixed with magnesium oxide. Instead of magnesium oxide, zinc oxide; magnesia; thoria; zirconia or alumina may be used. Gaskets and electrode supports may be incorporated in the electrolyte body during the pressing operation. |
