Organic phosphites and synthetic resin compositions containing the same

The invention comprises phosphite esters having at least one aliphatic or cycloaliphatic group and at least one polycarbocyclic phenolic group attached to each phosphite group, the carbocyclic nuclei of the polycarbocyclic phenolic group being joined by a bivalent linking radical other than a thioether or polysulphide group, and the polycarbocyclic group having at least one free phenolic hydroxyl group attached to one of the carbocyclic nuclei. The phosphites may be of formula wherein each Ar is a mono- or poly-carbocyclic aromatic nucleus, Y is a bivalent linking nucleus other than -S- or -(S)x-, e.g. alkylene, -O-, oxyalkylene, thioalkylene, cycloalkylene, Z is hydrogen or mono- or bivalent radicals sufficient to satisfy the valencies of the phosphite oxygen atoms, at least one of said valences being satisfied by an aliphatic or cycloaliphatic group, and m is 1 to 5. Polymeric forms may exist. The esters are prepared by conventional transesterification procedures. Examples prepare: (3) isooctyl 2,21-bis(p-hydroxyphenyl)propane phenyl phosphite; (4) tridecyl 4,41-n-butylidene-bis(2-t.-butyl-5-methylphenol) phenyl phosphite and (6) 2-ethylhexyl 2,2 - methylene - bis(4 - methyl - 6 - 11 - methylcyclohexylphenol) phenyl phosphite, of the above type and also: (1) tris-(4,41-n-butylidene-bis(2 - t. - butyl - 5 - methylphenol) phosphite; (2) (4,41 - benzylidene - bis (2 - t. - butyl - 5 - methylphenol) diphenyl phosphite; (5) isooctyl phenyl 4,41 - thio - bis - (2 - t. - butyl - 5 - methylphenol) phosphite; (7) tris[2,21 - bis - (p - hydroxyphenyl)propane phosphite; and (8) tris[4,41-thio - bis(2 - t. - butyl - 5 - methylphenol) phosphite.ALSO:Vinyl chloride polymers and copolymers and polymers of olefines are stabilized against heat deterioration by means of phosphite esters having at least one polycarbocyclic phenolic group attached to each phosphite group, the carbocyclic nuclei of the polycarbocyclic phenolic group being joined by a bivalent linking radical, and the polycarbocyclic phenolic group having at least one free phenolic OH group attached to one of the carbocyclic nuclei. The phosphite may be of the type (or similar polymeric compounds) where each Ar is a carbocyclic aromatic nucleus, m is 1 to 5, Z represents hydrogen or mono- or bivalent organic radicals to satisfy the phosphite oxygen valences and Y may be alkylene, ether, thioether, polysulphide, oxyalkylene, thioalkylene, or cycloalkylene. Other substances which may be present in the vinyl chloride polymer composition include polyvalent metal salts of C6- 18 monocarboxylic acids, conventional phosphite additives, epoxy compounds, plasticizers and parting agents. Examples of vinyl chloride polymer compositions contain dioctyl phthalate, isooctyl epoxystearate, tris-(2-ethylhexyl) phosphate, epoxy soybean oil, zinc stearate, barium cadmium laurate and 2-ethylhexyl diphenyl phosphate. Stabilized polypropylene examples contain as additional additives: zinc 2-ethylhexoate; dilauryl thiodipropionate; 4,41-n-butylidene - bis - (2 - t - butyl - 5 - methylphenol).
