PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a method and an apparatus for finishing a square timber capable of sufficiently planing and finishing the timber in a higher efficiency. SOLUTION: The apparatus for finishing the square timber comprises a first planer 2 having a pair of rotary planer units 11, and a front ruler board 3 and a rear ruler board 4 for specifying a feeding attitude of the material at front and rear means of the planer 2. The ruler board 3 has a pair of guides 18 for sandwiching the material in the substantially entire length of a roughly sawing material A0 in its longitudinal direction to symmetrically approach to and separate from a central position of the planer 2 in a means for finishing an object product square timber A1 from the material A0. The board 3 specifies the feeding attitude of the material in a state in which the material is lightly sandwiched in a no-correcting degree, and detects the shape of the material A0. Further, the apparatus comprises a secondary finishing unit such as a second planer 8 or the like at a rear means of the unit 11, and secondarily works such as removes or the like a knife mark retained on the surface of the timber planed by the unit 11.
